If
you have a child under the age of 8, with ages 3 or 4 usually
being the youngest, we do have what we call a buddy
seat. This allows your child to ride tandem behind
you. This is a version of a saddle, which attaches
directly to your saddle. It has it's own hand hold for
your child to hold onto. It has it's own set of
stirrups It also has a front and back for support and
added comfort. For most children, it is a snug fit and
holds them securely in place behind you.
The
manufacturer suggests it
will accommodate up to 50 pounds.
Your child will need to be able to hold on unassisted, and they
must be able to sit steady in the saddle for your selected
period of time - 1 hour ride, etc.
The rate for a child in the buddy
seat is the same as for anyone on their own horse, as the
rates are per person. The reason for this, is that when
we take a tandem rider in the buddy seat, we are asking one
horse to do the work of two, with the additional precious
cargo being a little bit extra excited and extra wiggly at
times, and the horse is being asked to be extra patient and
forgiving. We are attaching two saddle seats and it is
just as much preparation and energy for us and the horse, as
if we were to saddle another separate horse with another
separate rider to assist for the duration of your selected
trail ride.
